Healthy Aging for Women– Lessons from Generations Before

As the “boomers” are beginning to reach their 50’s and beyond, it’s important to take advantage of all the progress we’ve made in our understanding of healthy aging. The world was a different place when our mothers were coming into middle age– sports were primarily for men, and even for them, exercise was an occasional game of golf. Nutritional sciences were less developed, and red meats predominated family dinners.

The women of our generation benefit from a deeper understanding of how to preserve our minds and bodies into our elder years. These three goals are crucial to healthy aging:

Physical Fitness– It is no surprise that diet and exercise play an enormous role in healthy aging. People over 50 who exercise reap enormous health benefits compared to their sedentary counterparts. Continued physical fitness helps women live longer, healthier, and more independent lives. Especially as women go through peri-menopause or menopause, it is of the utmost importance to take care of ourselves. Get exercise, eat well, maintain good weights, get enough sleep, and get regular check-ups, and you’re on your way to a much more positive aging process.

Emotional Fulfillment– Similar to physical fitness, it is important to maintain a positive emotional environment in order to have a healthy aging experience. A physically fit body is only the first step; it is crucial to have a healthy mind as well. Take time out of your day to have fun, have lunch with a girlfriend, and talk on the phone with someone who makes you laugh. Be sure you are passionate about your work; if not, consider taking the bold step of re-evaluating your career.

Spiritual Wellness– Keep your spiritual well-being in mind. Take time to reflect and be grateful for all your blessings. Have some quiet time to yourself.
